Re “Is This the Conclude of the Videos?,” by Ross Douthat (column, Sunday Evaluation, March 27):
Why are pundits so keen to generate the obituaries of components of our lifestyle that increase so a lot of enriching dimensions to our lives? The radio was intended to destroy textbooks the web was meant to get rid of the newspaper tv was supposed to eliminate theater YouTube was meant to eliminate television.
All of these joyful, irreplaceable features of our society have survived irrespective of pundits’ finest attempts to bury them, and so much too will the films. Like the novel, the newspaper, the enjoy and television, the movies will survive. What will transform is how we expertise them.

To the Editor:
I haven’t been to a film in a theater for additional than 20 years, way before Covid. Why? The interminable adverts, the stink of pretend butter on popcorn, the seats, the peering concerning men and women taller than me. Most of all, the ridiculously loud audio ranges.
About 10 years ago, I bought a fairly costly projector, a seven-foot-huge pull-down display, an audio-movie receiver and six great loudspeakers. Considering that then, we can happily stream motion pictures from the regular sites or community library, and we can lease or get DVDs.
So why go to a film theater at all? Scenario closed.

To the Editor:
When good journalists predict the finish of flicks, they truly mean that films are shifting in measurement, format, articles, earnings and system.
My only quibble with Ross Douthat’s terrific piece is his use of the alarmist “End of the Movies.” Flicks have survived each new engineering from audio to the world wide web over far more than a century.
If something has finished, it is the primacy of motion pictures as customers’ initial choice. The Iphone launched an intimate way to watch flicks, but also brought a numbing variety of competing information, thieving several hours absent from motion picture theater attendance.
The motion picture small business will evolve and flourish as executives, associates and expertise survive this disruptive time period, the 1-two punch of streaming and Covid. For buyers indifferent to monitor dimension, there have never ever been a lot more selections. For expertise, there has never been additional function, around the world. This is an unbeatable combination.

To the Editor:
I was ready for an individual someplace to seem the loss of life knell. And Ross Douthat did it masterfully. I was not waiting joyfully, of program.
I grew up with Roy Rogers and Gene Autry Saturday matinees. The virtually all-working day party (which could not have established my individuals back more than a buck) gave me entree to the grownup entire world, fantasy, audio, information, comedy. Tv set did not really compete for a when. And then it did. And then the movies didn’t seem like the “must see” they had been.
It is been a lengthy time coming, but didn’t the industry dig its personal grave with overblown, overly long, pretentious movies that began to truly feel missable?
This is coming from a motion picture lover who lookups for one particular much more black and white movie noir that she could have skipped from the 1930s, ’40s or ’50s most evenings. And when she finds a person, it’s seen in fewer than two hrs. Which is a marketing position!

‘We Expect Supreme Integrity From the Court’
To the Editor:
Re “Election Texts Shine New Gentle on Clout Held by Justice’s Wife” (entrance website page, March 27):
Chief Justice John Roberts can no more time hide. The Supreme Court’s rotting name has accelerated in latest times, with the unsigned, commentless selections supplying way to news about an associate justice, Clarence Thomas, whose moral conduct is deservedly under rigorous scrutiny.
We count on supreme integrity from the court docket. We will need it, but we’re not obtaining it.
Chief Justice Roberts demands to impose controls, and he demands to make them loud and very clear so the nation understands that it can the moment yet again believe in the court docket. For individuals justices who simply cannot dwell underneath a rigorous code of ethics, exit phase correct.
Honesty. Actually, that is not a whole lot to check with.

Reading ‘Dirty’ Shakespeare
To the Editor:
Re “Florida Governor Indicators Invoice Fought by L.G.B.T.Q. Teams, White Home and Hollywood” (information write-up, March 29):
When I (now 73) was in elementary faculty, my school assigned censored editions of Shakespeare with the “dirty” bits omitted. The initial point we did was to get unedited editions from libraries and older siblings so we could look at the editions and obtain the censored bits. I honestly really don’t don’t forget how considerably time I put in on the “clean” parts.
At wonderful harm to the means of teachers and educators to assistance kids navigate the progressively sophisticated and scary territory of modern identification, social everyday living, drugs and, of course, sexuality, legislatures like Florida’s are sending young children straight to much less reputable but at any time-current sources of info about these subject areas, censoring teachers and purging faculty libraries and curriculums.
Younger persons devoid of ready accessibility to different information and facts resources are remaining despatched straight into the waiting around rooms of university counselors, who are legislatively muzzled and thus largely unable to enable them.
How dare legislators (with the false claim that they are aiding young children and mothers and fathers) send out us all back to the Middle Ages?
