Faculty of Art Welcomes Lauren Lee McCarthy as Inaugural Visiting Artist Speaker in 2022

The School of Art in the Fulbright Faculty of Arts and Sciences is thrilled to start the spring semester Checking out Lecture Sequence with artist and educator Lauren Lee McCarthy. The lecture sequence will be held nearly and will welcome McCarthy at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3.

McCarthy is a Los Angeles-centered artist inspecting social interactions in the midst of surveillance, automation and algorithmic dwelling. She is the creator of p5.js, an open source programming language for understanding artistic expression by means of code on line. She allows immediate the Processing Foundation, a non-revenue whose mission is to endorse software package literacy within the visible arts, and visible literacy in just engineering-associated fields — and to make these fields obtainable to various communities.

“Programmer, artist, activist and trainer Lauren Lee McCarthy examines social relationships amid automation and algorithmic living,” said Ryan Slone, assistant professor of graphic structure. “In a time of unprecedented electronic surveillance, McCarthy’s investigations research the extent to which technology impacts our lives. We are honored to welcome Lauren Lee McCarthy as our inaugural checking out artist speaker in 2022.” 

McCarthy is a 2021 United States Artist Fellow, 2020 Sundance New Frontier Fellow, 2020 Eyebeam Fellow, 2019 Resourceful Money Grantee and has been a resident at Eyebeam, Pioneer Works, Autodesk and Ars Electronica. Her work SOMEONE was awarded the Ars Electronica Golden Nica and the Japan Media Arts Social Impact Award, and her work LAUREN was awarded the IDFA DocLab Award for Immersive Non-Fiction.

Her work has been exhibited internationally, at locations this sort of as the Barbican Centre, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Haus der elektronischen Künste, SIGGRAPH, Onassis Cultural Heart, IDFA DocLab, Seoul Museum of Artwork and the Japan Media Arts Festival.

She retains an Masters of Fantastic Arts from the College of California, Los Angeles, a Bachelor of Science in Computer system Science and Bachelor of Science in art and design from Massachusetts Institute of Technological innovation.

McCarthy is now an affiliate professor at University of California, Los Angeles in structure media arts.
